The Clock Strikes Midnights

Updated: Oct 31, 2022

It’s never been a better time to be a Taylor Swift fan with the release of the pop mogul’s 10th studio album titled Midnights, an ode to all the sleepless nights that inspired the album’s title.

Swift’s timing of this album release could not have been more flawless amongst the revolting anti-semitic tropes that Kanye West has been spewing. Her feud with West sparked the inspiration for 2017 album reputation, a revenge era for the popstar and unlike anything she had previously released. Midnights could be considered a softer take on her reputation era with bold production value (Vigilante Shit, Midnight Rain, Lavender Haze) and a little help from the one and only Jack Antonoff. As West was dropped by Adidas and has been taking huge losses, Swift broke a record of 1.2 million album units sold in the US during the first three days of the album’s release, breaking her own record of more than one million records sold in an opening week since the 2017 release of reputation.

The five things that kept the pop singer up all night inspiring the Midnights album she shared were, self loathing (Anti-Hero), fantasizing about revenge (Vigilante Shit, Karma), wondering what might’ve been (Midnight Rain, Would’ve Could’ve, Should’ve), falling in love (Snow On The Beach Ft. Lana Del Rey, Maroon), and falling apart (Question…?, Bigger Than The Whole Sky).

Taylor Swift is no stranger to getting sweet revenge as the track Karma delves into, “Karma is a god/karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend/karma’s a relaxing thought/Aren’t you envious that for you it’s not?” On Vigilante Shit, Swift has been “dressing for revenge” and allegedly calls out Scooter Braun, the current owner of all her masters, on a Billie Eilish you should see me in a crown-esque beat, “While he was doing lines/And crossing all of mine/Someone told his white collar crimes to the FBI.” Burn. More standouts from the album include Midnight Rain (rumored to be about one of Swift’s past lovers Tom Hiddleston or Taylor Lautner) and Question…? She sampled a line from 1989’s Out Of The Woods, leading fans to believe the song is certainly about another one of her prominent past lovers, Harry Styles.

Lavender Haze is a strong opening 80’s psychedelic pop infused track with a message about dismissing the opinions of others for the sake of love and your own happiness, “I’m damned if I do give a damn what people say/talk your talk and go viral…get if of your chest/get it off my desk.”

What is simply mesmerizing about Taylor Swift as an artist is her ability to be TIMELESS and to channel all of her emotions into lyrics that are powerful narratives. Fans go crazy for her countless easter eggs and her nods to past albums that she is in the process of re-recording. The next re-record is rumored to be Speak Now.

Taylor Swift is not afraid to be vulnerable or vigorous. She is redefining what it means to be a female artist in the music industry by taking back what is rightfully hers in a non traditional sense. She is a compelling storyteller that is always in charge of her own narrative.
